The lemma consists of two parts that depend on different assumptions (a distinction often not highlighted in the literature): The first statement applies over every ground The Schur lemma says that a ring D of all endomorphisms of the left R -module V is a skew field. Therefore V can be considered as a right vector space over D. With the help of DCC one now proves that this space has finite dimension n.
